Jan Smeterlin was born on July 2, 1892 in Poland. From a young age, he displayed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano when he was just seven years old. Despite their wishes, Jan continued to pursue his passion for music, secretly practicing the piano whenever he could.
Despite his family's disapproval, Jan was awarded a scholarship that allowed him to study under the renowned Leopold Godowsky in Vienna. Under Godowsky's mentorship, Jan honed his skills and developed a deep appreciation for Polish composer Karol Szymanowski's music.
Jan's talent as a pianist quickly became evident, and he embarked on a successful concert career, gaining recognition for his mastery of Szymanowski's repertoire. Throughout his career, he focused much of his recording efforts on the works of Frederic Chopin, another celebrated Polish composer.
