James Coyle was born on March 23, 1873, in Drum, Ireland, to Margaret Durney and Owen Coyle. Growing up in a devout Catholic family, he was instilled with a deep sense of faith from an early age. After completing his early education in Ireland, Coyle went on to study at Mungret College before embarking on a journey to Italy, where he attended the prestigious Pontifical North American College.
Upon his return to Ireland, Coyle was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1896. On August 11, 1921, tragedy struck when E.R. Stephenson gunned down Father Coyle in front of the rectory of The Cathedral of Saint Paul. The trial that followed saw Stephenson defended by attorney Hugo Black, who would later go on to serve as a United States Supreme Court Justice.
