Ieng Sary was born on October 24, 1925, in Vietnam. He later became a co-founder of the Khmer Rouge, which was the Communist Party of Kampuchea in Cambodia. His involvement in this party would bring about a dark chapter in Cambodian history.
Sary embarked on his education in France, studying in Paris and staying in the Latin Quarter, which was a hotspot for student radicalism at the time. It was during this period that he became involved in leftist politics, paving the way for his later involvement in the Khmer Rouge.
After returning to Cambodia, Sary rose through the ranks of the Khmer Rouge, eventually becoming one of its key figures. He served as the Foreign Minister of Kampuchea from 1975 to 1979, during which time the regime carried out brutal policies that resulted in the deaths of millions of Cambodians.
In 2007, Sary was arrested for crimes against humanity and was later charged with genocide in 2009. However, he passed away before the case against him could reach a verdict. His death spared him from facing justice for the atrocities committed during his time in power.
Sary married Ieng Thirith in 1951, further intertwining his family with the leadership of the Khmer Rouge. He was also the brother-in-law of Pol Pot, another notorious figure associated with the regime's brutal dictatorship.
Despite his passing, Sary's legacy continues to haunt Cambodia, and his role in the Khmer Rouge's reign of terror will forever be remembered as a dark chapter in the nation's history.
