Ibn-e-Insha was born on June 15, 1927, in the Jalandhar District of Punjab, India. His real name was Sher Muhammad Khan, but he chose the pen name Ibn-e-Insha, which means "Son of Insha" in Arabic as a tribute to his mentor Insha Allah Khan Insha, a renowned Urdu poet.
