Hugh Jones was born on January 11, 1955 in England. He discovered his love for long distance running at a young age and began competing while attending Latymer Upper School. His talent and dedication to the sport earned him a spot on the long distance running team at the University of Liverpool, where he continued to hone his skills.
In 1982, Hugh Jones made history by becoming the first British man to win the prestigious London Marathon. This victory solidified his status as a top contender in the world of long distance running. Not content with just one major win, he went on to break records at the Stockholm Marathon with an impressive time of 2:11:37.
After retiring from competitive running, Hugh Jones transitioned into a new role as the editor of Distance Running magazine. His passion for the sport led him to also serve as the President of the Road Runners Club, where he continued to advocate for and support fellow runners.
Outside of his professional life, Hugh Jones is a proud father to four children. He has a son named Nathan, as well as three daughters named Coral, Ella, and Holly. Family is incredibly important to him, and he finds joy in spending time with his loved ones.
