Homer Lea was born on November 17, 1876, in Denver, Colorado, to Alfred E. Lea, a real estate broker, and Hersa A. Coberly Lea. He grew up with his two sisters in a middle-class family.
Lea attended high school in both Colorado and California before briefly studying at Occidental College and Stanford University. It was during this time that he became interested in Chinese military and political affairs.
After leaving college, Lea joined the Bao Huang Hui, a Chinese military and political organization. His small stature, standing at only five feet and three inches, did not deter him from becoming an influential figure in the group.
Lea's health was a constant struggle throughout his life. He suffered from degenerative kidney disease, vision problems, and chronic headaches. Despite these challenges, he remained dedicated to his political work.
Lea became known for his active involvement in early 20th-century political reform movements in China. He served as an advisor to Sun Yat-sen, a key figure in the Chinese Republican revolution of 1911. Lea's knowledge of military strategy and political affairs made him a valuable asset to the movement.
Although his life was cut short due to health complications, Homer Lea's impact on Chinese politics and reform movements was significant. He was a visionary leader who dedicated his life to bringing about positive change in China.
