Holden Roberto was born on December 12, 1923, in Sao Salvador, Angola. He was the son of Garcia Diasiwa Roberto and Joana Lala Nekaka. Growing up in Angola during a time of political unrest, Roberto was strongly influenced by his surroundings and the struggles faced by his people.
Before entering politics, Holden Roberto worked for the Belgium Finance Ministry. However, his passion for his country's liberation led him to join the fight for independence. In 1962, he founded the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) and quickly rose to prominence as its leader.
