He was raised by his parents Mike Aufenkamp and Kay Koch, and he moved around various towns and cities in Nebraska before eventually settling in Norfolk with his mother. Growing up, Gringo showed an interest in music at a young age, and he eventually picked up a guitar and started playing and singing in various coffee shops and bars around northeast Nebraska.
Initially pursuing a career in indie music under the moniker Michael Goes Acoustic, Gringo's musical journey took an unexpected turn when a hip-hop song he produced and recorded as a joke quickly gained attention. This led him to transition into hip-hop, incorporating elements of rap into his live performances. He started opening for big name rappers and gaining recognition in the music industry.
