Gregg Araki was born on December 17, 1959, in California. He attended the University of Southern California (USC) and later transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studied film. It was during his time at UCSB that Araki became interested in independent filmmaking and began to explore his creative talents.
After graduating from UC Santa Barbara, Araki dove headfirst into the world of independent cinema. He quickly gained recognition for his unique storytelling and bold filmmaking style. In 1992, he released his groundbreaking film, The Living End, which followed the lives of two HIV-positive men. The film received critical acclaim and put Araki on the map as a leading voice in the New Gay Cinema movement.
Following the success of The Living End, Araki continued to push boundaries with his work. In 2006, he was honored with the Filmmaker on the Edge award at the Provincetown International Film Festival, recognizing his fearless approach to storytelling and filmmaking.

Throughout his career, Araki has been known for his openness about his personal life. He identified as gay until 1997 when he entered into a relationship with Kathleen Robertson. After the relationship ended, Araki publicly came out as bisexual, embracing his fluid sexuality.
