Grant Fuhr was born on September 28, 1962, in Canada. Growing up, he showed a natural talent for hockey and began playing at a young age. He quickly rose through the ranks of youth hockey and caught the attention of scouts early on.
In 1979, Fuhr began his professional career with the WHL's Victoria Cougars. He quickly made a name for himself as a standout goaltender, drawing the attention of NHL teams. In 1981, he was selected 8th overall in the NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.
Once Fuhr joined the Oilers, he quickly became an integral part of the team's success. Teaming up with the legendary Wayne Gretzky, Fuhr helped lead the Oilers to six Stanley Cup Championships from 1984 to 1990. He was a 6-time All-Star and was awarded the prestigious Vezina Trophy in 1988 as the league's top goaltender.
After a successful career, Fuhr retired with a number of NHL records to his name. He holds the record for most assists by a goaltender in a single season, with 14 in 1983-84. He also holds the record for most consecutive appearances by a goaltender in a season, with 76 in 1995-96.
In 2014, Fuhr married Lisa Cavanaugh. Together, they have created a happy and fulfilling life outside of the hockey world.
Grant Fuhr will always be remembered as one of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history. His skill, dedication, and leadership on the ice have solidified his place in the Hall of Fame. Alongside greats like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, Fuhr helped shape the legendary Oilers team of the 1980s and left an indelible mark on the sport of hockey.
