Blake began his career in espionage working as a double agent for the Soviet Union's KGB and MGB within England's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) during the height of the Cold War. His work as a spy was eventually discovered, and he was imprisoned in 1961. However, in a daring escape, Blake broke out of prison in 1966 and defected to the USSR.
During his time in Russia, Blake was honored with the prestigious Russian Order of Friendship by none other than President Vladimir Putin himself in 2007. He also published his first book, "No Other Choice," in 1990, detailing his life as a double agent and his decision to defect.
Before his defection, Blake was married with three children. After settling in Russia, he remarried and had more children with his second wife. Despite his past actions, Blake remained a devoted family man throughout his life, always putting his loved ones first.
One interesting footnote in Blake's story is the planned film by renowned director Alfred Hitchcock titled "The Short Night" based on Blake's life. Unfortunately, Hitchcock passed away before the film could be made, leaving the project unfinished.
