Gary Naysmith was born on November 16, 1978, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He grew up in the city and developed a love for soccer at a young age. Naysmith began playing youth soccer with the Whitehill Welfare Colts in 1991 and continued until 1996.
Naysmith's professional playing career began in the Scottish Football League with Hearts in 1996. Naysmith made the move to Everton in 2000, where he spent eight successful seasons, making over 150 appearances for the club.
