Francis Jane Crosby, known as Fanny Crosby, was born on March 24, 1820 in Brewster, New York. She was the only child of John Crosby and Mercy Crosby. Sadly, Fanny lost her eyesight at a very young age. At just six weeks old, she became ill with a cold that affected her eyes. The family doctor mistakenly treated her condition with mustard poultices, which ultimately damaged her optic nerves, leaving her blind for the rest of her life.
Despite her disability, Fanny never let her lack of sight hold her back. Her mother Mercy educated her at home, teaching her to read and write. Fanny quickly developed a love for literature and poetry, and by the age of eight, she had written her first poem about her blindness. She later attended the New York Institute for the Blind, where she continued to excel in her studies.
In 1858, Fanny married Alexander Van Alstyne, Jr., a fellow blind teacher. The couple had a daughter shortly after their marriage, but tragically, the child died in infancy. Despite this heartbreaking loss, Fanny and Alexander remained dedicated to each other for many years before ultimately separating in 1880.
Throughout her life, Fanny Crosby was a prolific writer, penning over 8,000 hymns and gospel songs. Some of her most famous works include "Blessed Assurance," "To God Be the Glory," and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Her lyrical compositions were deeply rooted in her faith and shared messages of hope, love, and redemption.
In her later years, Fanny Crosby remained active in missionary work and continued to write hymns and poetry until her passing in 1915. Her legacy as a talented poet and composer lives on, with her work still being celebrated and cherished by many.
