Eugene McCarthy was born on March 29, 1916 in Watkins, Minnesota. He grew up in a middle-class family and was the third child out of four. As a young man, McCarthy attended St. John's University and graduated in 1935 with a degree in economics. After college, he worked as a high school teacher for a brief period before deciding to pursue a career in politics.
McCarthy's political career began in 1948 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Despite his grassroots support and strong showing in the early primaries, McCarthy ultimately lost the nomination to Hubert Humphrey.

McCarthy's personal life was marked by both triumph and tragedy. In 1969, he separated from his wife of 24 years, Abigail, and began a long-term relationship with journalist Marya McLaughlin. The affair caused a scandal at the time but did not diminish McCarthy's standing in the political world.
In his later years, McCarthy focused on his writing career. He published several books, including a collection of poetry titled Cool Reflections: Poetry For The Who, What, When, Where and Especially Why of It All. McCarthy's poetry reflected his deep thoughts on life, love, and politics.
In 2005, McCarthy passed away due to complications from Parkinson's disease. His funeral was attended by many political figures, including former President Bill Clinton, who delivered a moving eulogy in honor of McCarthy's legacy.
