Emma Anzai was born on April 30, 1981 in Singapore to Japanese and Australian parents. She spent her early childhood in Singapore before moving to Tokyo, where she lived for several years. In 1997, her family relocated to Sydney, Australia, where she would eventually pursue her passion for music.
While attending high school in Sydney, Emma met lead vocalist and guitarist Shimon Moore. The two shared a love for music and quickly bonded over their shared musical interests. In the music room of their high school, Emma and Shimon formed the hard rock band Sick Puppies. Emma initially played guitar in the band before they recruited a drummer to complete the lineup.
Despite their humble beginnings, Sick Puppies quickly gained momentum in the Australian music scene. Emma worked as a telemarketer in Sydney to help finance their debut EP, Dog's Breakfast.
