Elián, his mother, and a group of twelve other passengers set out on a boat towards Miami, Florida. However, the journey took a deadly turn when the boat suffered an engine malfunction and began to sink. Despite their best efforts, all but three passengers drowned in the rough waters. Elián was one of the lucky survivors who was rescued by fishermen and turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard.
After being rescued, Elián was taken in by relatives in Miami. However, his father, Juan Miguel González Quintana, who was still in Cuba, fought for his son's return. The custody battle quickly became a highly publicized and controversial international affair. U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno ultimately made the decision to return Elián to his father's custody in Cuba.
In April 2000, federal agents seized Elián from his relatives' home in Miami and returned him to Cuba, where he was reunited with his father.
