Edith Pretty was born on January 8, 1883, in Elland, Yorkshire, United States. She was born into a family of successful industrialists who had amassed wealth by manufacturing equipment for the gas industry. Despite her privileged upbringing, Edith had a heart for service and worked as a quartermaster at a Red Cross auxiliary hospital during World War I.
In 1926, Edith married Frank Pretty, and the couple welcomed their son, Robert Dempster Pretty, in 1930. Sadly, Frank passed away from stomach cancer in 1934, leaving Edith to raise their son on her own. Edith's sister, Elizabeth, lovingly stepped in to help raise Robert.
One of the defining moments in Edith Pretty's life came when she decided to investigate the burial mounds located on her estate. Hiring a local excavator, Edith's curiosity led to the discovery of the Sutton Hoo ship burial, which contained a wealth of Anglo-Saxon artifacts. This find was considered one of the most significant archeological discoveries of its time.
Aside from her archeological pursuits, Edith was deeply interested in Spiritualism. She visited a faith healer and supported spiritualist churches financially. Her belief in the afterlife and connection to the spiritual world played a significant role in her life.
In 1939, Edith generously donated all the artifacts found on her estate to the British Museum, ensuring that they would be preserved and studied for years to come. The British Museum still houses these artifacts, showcasing Edith's contribution to the field of archeology.
