Dirk Kempthorne was born on October 29, 1951, in San Diego, California. He grew up in a military family, moving around frequently during his childhood. His father served in the United States Navy, instilling in young Dirk a sense of duty and commitment to serving his country.
Kempthorne attended the University of Idaho, where he studied Political Science and graduated in 1975. His time at the university shaped his political views and aspirations, setting him on a path towards a career in public service.
After completing his education, Kempthorne entered politics and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as the Mayor of Boise from 1986 to 1993, where he focused on promoting economic development and improving infrastructure in the city. In 1993, he was elected to the United States Senate, representing the state of Idaho until 1999.
In 1999, Kempthorne made history by becoming the first Republican Governor of Idaho in 24 years. During his time as Governor, he implemented conservative policies, such as cutting taxes and promoting business growth. His leadership was recognized nationally, and in 2006, President George W. Bush appointed him as the 49th United States Secretary of the Interior.
As Secretary of the Interior, Kempthorne faced numerous challenges, including managing public lands and protecting endangered species. His tenure was marked by controversy, as he came under fire for his environmental policies. He holds the record for protecting the fewest number of species over his term than any other Secretary in history.
Kempthorne is married to his wife, Patricia, and the couple has two children together. He values his family deeply and credits them for supporting him throughout his political career.
