Davey Lopes was born on March 3, 1945 in Providence, Rhode Island. He is the third of ten children and grew up in a close-knit family. From a young age, Lopes showed a natural talent for baseball and was determined to make a career out of playing the sport he loved.
Lopes attended Iowa Wesleyan College and Washburn University, where he played college baseball and honed his skills on the field. In 1968, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round of the MLB Draft. This marked the beginning of his professional baseball career and he quickly rose through the ranks to become a key player for the Dodgers.
One of the highlights of Lopes' career came in 1981, when he helped lead the Dodgers to victory in the World Series. As a player, Lopes was known for his exceptional defensive skills and was awarded the Golden Glove in 1978. He made four consecutive All-Star games from 1978 to 1981, solidifying his reputation as one of the top players in the league.
After retiring as a player, Lopes transitioned to coaching and found success in this role as well. In 2008, he was the first base coach for the Philadelphia Phillies when they won the World Series.
