Claudia Emerson was born on January 13, 1957, in Chatham, Virginia. She grew up in this small town, surrounded by the beauty of the countryside, which would later inspire much of her poetry. From a young age, she had a deep appreciation for language and the written word.
Emerson attended the University of Virginia, where she earned an undergraduate degree in English. It was during her time at UVA that she discovered her passion for poetry and creative writing.
