Charlie Hernandez was born on February 19, 1965 in Puerto Rico. From a young age, he showed a passion for politics and social issues. Hernandez attended the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, where he studied political science and journalism. It was during his time at university that he founded the student newspaper, Campus Colegial, which quickly gained popularity for its insightful articles on student life and political events.
After graduating from university, Hernandez decided to pursue a career in politics. In 2001, he ran for a seat in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives representing District 19. His charisma and passion for serving the community helped him win the election, making him one of the youngest politicians to ever hold office in Puerto Rico.
In 2012, Hernandez was elected as a Representative At-Large, a position that allowed him to represent the entire island of Puerto Rico. His dedication to his constituents and ability to work across party lines earned him the respect of his colleagues, leading to his appointment as Majority Speaker.
Outside of politics, Hernandez is a devoted father and husband. He was previously married to journalist Damaris Suarez, with whom he has a son. Despite the demands of his political career, Hernandez always makes time for his family and values their unwavering support.
Throughout his career, Hernandez has received numerous accolades for his commitment to public service. In 1986, he was honored with the Most Distinguished Student of the Department of Social Sciences award in college, recognizing his academic achievements and leadership skills.
