Charles Frank Gemar was born on April 4, 1955 in Yankton, South Dakota. From a young age, he was fascinated with space and dreamed of one day becoming an astronaut. His passion for exploration and adventure would shape his future career.
After graduating from high school, Gemar attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. Following his graduation, he served in the U.S. Army as a combat arms officer, before pursuing further education at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in engineering.
In 1984, Gemar was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA and began his training at the Johnson Space Center. He made his first spaceflight aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1989, during which he conducted numerous experiments and observations. Gemar went on to fly two more missions, including one that involved the recovery of the Space Shuttle in Florida, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Throughout his time at NASA, Gemar held various positions within the organization and was instrumental in the success of numerous space missions. He logged over 24 days in space, circling the Earth a total of 385 times. His dedication and expertise made him a respected member of the astronaut corps.
Outside of his career, Gemar is a devoted husband to his wife, Charlene Stringer, and a loving father to their two children. Despite the demands of his work as an astronaut, he always made time for his family and valued their support throughout his endeavors.
