Brian Schatz was born on October 20, 1972 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He later moved to Hawaii, where he would begin his career in public service.

After the passing of Senator Daniel Inouye in 2012, Schatz was appointed to fill the vacant seat. He was sworn in as the US Senator from Hawaii on December 26, 2012, making him the youngest member of the Senate at the time.
