Robert Menendez, known as Bob Menendez, was born on January 1, 1954, in New York. He grew up in a working-class family in Union City, New Jersey. Menendez was the son of Cuban immigrants, and he learned the values of hard work and perseverance from a young age. He attended Union Hill High School, where he excelled academically and was involved in student government.
After graduating from high school, Menendez went on to attend Saint Peter's College in Jersey City. He earned a degree in political science and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Rutgers University School of Law.
Menendez's interest in politics began at a young age. At just 20 years old, he was elected to the Union City Board of Education, where he worked to improve the quality of education for students in his community. His passion for public service only grew from there.
In 1986, Menendez was elected Mayor of Union City, a position he held until 1992. During his time as mayor, he focused on economic development and improving the quality of life for residents.
