Born on January 11, 1963 in Orlando, Florida, Monty Sopp, known to the wrestling world as Billy Gunn, discovered his love for wrestling at a young age. He grew up watching the greats of the sport, dreaming of one day stepping into the ring himself.
Gunn began his professional wrestling career in 1993 when he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Alongside his on-screen brother Bart Gunn, they formed the tag team The Smoking Gunns. The duo quickly made a name for themselves, winning their first Tag Team Championship in 1995.
Throughout the 90s, Gunn achieved great success in the WWF, becoming a fan favorite with his charisma and in-ring skill. He competed as part of various teams, including The New Age Outlaws and Billy and Chuck, solidifying his place as a top tag team competitor.
After a period of absence from the WWE, Gunn made a triumphant return in 2012. This time, however, he took on a new role as a trainer for WWE's developmental brand, NXT. His years of experience and expertise made him a valuable asset to the up-and-coming talent.
In 2019, Gunn made another career move by joining All Elite Wrestling (AEW) as a coach. His wealth of knowledge and experience in the wrestling industry made him a respected figure in guiding the next generation of wrestlers.
Outside of the ring, Gunn is a devoted family man. He has been married twice and has two sons, Austin and Colten, from his first marriage. Both sons have followed in their father's footsteps and pursued careers as professional wrestlers.
Billy Gunn's legacy in the wrestling world is undeniable. Known for his larger-than-life personality and in-ring prowess, he has left a lasting impact on the industry. His success as a tag team wrestler and trainer has cemented his place as a wrestling icon.
