Benjamin Spock was born on February 2, 1903, in New Haven, Connecticut. He was the oldest of six children in a family of Dutch descent. While at Yale, he was also a member of the Olympic rowing team, where he excelled and ultimately won a gold medal at the 1924 games in Paris.
