Angelos Postecoglou was born on August 27, 1965, in Greece. He moved to Australia in 1970 with his family after his father Dimitris lost his business. From a young age, Postecoglou was passionate about soccer and began playing for South Melbourne at the age of nine. He continued with the club throughout his junior career and eventually made his debut at the senior level in 1984.

After retiring as a player in 1993, Postecoglou transitioned into coaching and started as an assistant coach for South Melbourne. In 1996, he was promoted to head coach and led the team to success in the 1999 Oceania Club Championship.
