Angel Maxine, born Maxwell Okyere Opoku on March 9, 1990, in Tema, Ghana, is a singer, LGBTQ+ rights activist, and prominent figure in the Ghanaian music scene. Growing up in a religious household, Angel was heavily involved in music from a young age, serving as the choir mistress at her father's church. She discovered her passion for singing and performing early on, which would shape her future career.
After graduating from Koforidua University, Angel began performing under the stage name Sexy Lagazee. She quickly made a name for herself in the music industry, writing songs and providing backup vocals for various artists. In addition to her music career, Angel also pursued her passion for cooking, training as a chef and running a successful culinary service that catered for events ranging from parties to funerals.
Angel's journey as an LGBTQ+ rights activist began when she came out as transgender, becoming Ghana's first openly transgender musician. Through her music and advocacy work, Angel aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana and fight for equality and acceptance.
One of Angel's most notable achievements as an activist was her collaboration with fellow musicians Wanlove and Sister Deborah on the single "Wo Fie." The song was released in response to the police raid on the offices of LGBT+ Rights Ghana in January 2021. The title, which translates to "the same thing is in your home," sends a powerful message about the universal nature of love and acceptance.
Angel Maxine has amassed a significant following on social media, with 2,000 followers on Twitter, 5,000 on Facebook, and 10,000 on Instagram. Her online presence has allowed her to reach a wide audience and spread her message of inclusivity and equality.
In July 2021, Angel received support from British pop star Boy George, who released a song expressing solidarity with LGBTQ+ Ghanaians. This collaboration highlighted Angel's growing influence and impact on the international stage.
Throughout her career, Angel Maxine has remained dedicated to her dual passions of music and activism, using her platform to advocate for change and empower marginalized communities. As she continues to break barriers and challenge societal norms, Angel's influence in the music industry and LGBTQ+ rights movement will only continue to grow.
