Andy Hornby was born on January 21, 1967, in Scarborough, England. He attended St Peter's College at the University of Oxford before continuing his education at Harvard Business School.
After completing his studies, Hornby began his career as a business executive. He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the chief executive of The Restaurant Group, which owned popular eatery Wagamama.
In 2006, Hornby was appointed as the chief executive of HBOS, a prominent banking institution. Under his leadership, HBOS faced significant challenges that ultimately led to the brink of collapse in 2008.
Throughout his career, Hornby held various executive positions in different industries. He served as the co-chief operating officer at GVC Holdings, the group chief executive of Alliance Boots, and the chief executive of the betting chain Coral.
In 2013, The Banking Standards Commission raised concerns about Hornby and two other former HBOS bankers, calling for financial regulators to consider barring them from future roles in the financial sector.
In April 1991, Hornby married his wife Cathy. Together, they have two children—a daughter born in June 2000 and a son born in November 2003.
Hornby was at the helm of HBOS during the turbulent period when the bank had to be rescued by Lloyds in a deal brokered by then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
