Andrew John Furey was born on February 7, 1975, in St. John's, Canada. He grew up in a family with a strong tradition of public service. His father, George Furey, currently serves as the speaker of the Senate of Canada, and his uncle, Chuck Furey, was a cabinet minister.
Furey earned a bachelor's degree in science from the Memorial University of Newfoundland. He then pursued his passion for medicine, graduating from the MUN School of Medicine in 2001. In 2006, he furthered his education by completing a Fellowship in orthopedic trauma at the University of Maryland.
Throughout his medical career, Furey has been recognized for his outstanding achievements. In 2012, he was named Memorial University of Newfoundland's Alumnus of the Year. He later expanded his expertise by completing a diploma in organizational leadership from the University of Oxford in 2015.
While excelling in his medical profession, Furey began to explore his interest in politics. In 2015, he made headlines for receiving the Ignatian Spirit Award and was later named the Canadian Red Cross' humanitarian of the year for Newfoundland and Labrador in 2017.
His dedication to humanitarian causes was further highlighted by his philanthropic work in Haiti following the devastating 2010 earthquake. Furey's experiences in Haiti inspired him to write a book titled "Hope in the Balance: A Newfoundland Doctor Meets a World in Crisis," which was published in 2020.
In 2020, Furey made a significant career shift by running for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. He successfully secured victory over his opponent, receiving approximately two-thirds of the vote in the leadership election.
Following his leadership win, Furey assumed the role of premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, becoming the only premier of a province with a liberal party-controlled government. He represents the electoral district of Humber-Gros Morne in the House of Assembly.
Outside of his political and medical endeavors, Furey enjoys a fulfilling family life. He is married to Allison Furey, and together they have three children: Rachel, Maggie, and Mark. Furey's family has been a source of support and inspiration throughout his career.
With a strong foundation in public service, a distinguished medical background, and a commitment to humanitarian causes, Andrew John Furey continues to make a significant impact in both the medical and political arenas.
