Born as Dhanni Ram on July 21, 1960, in the village of Dugri in Punjab, India, the world would come to know him by his stage name, Amar Singh Chamkila. Growing up in poverty, he found solace in music from a young age. Despite his humble beginnings, he had a passion for Punjabi folk music that would eventually catapult him to fame.
Chamkila started his musical journey in his late teens, immersing himself in the vibrant Punjabi music scene. His unique voice and poetic lyrics quickly gained him a dedicated following. With hit songs like "Baba Tera Nankana" and "Pehle Lalkare Naal," he became a household name in the Punjabi music industry.
One of his most iconic songs, "Jatt Di Dushmani," showcased his talent not only as a singer but also as a songwriter. Many other popular vocalists covered this track, solidifying Chamkila's status as a musical legend.
Tragically, Chamkila's life was cut short when he and his second wife, Amarjot, were gunned down by a motorcycle gang. Despite his untimely death, his music continued to live on. His final album, "The Diamond," was released posthumously in 2014, further cementing his place in music history.
In 2024, a film documenting his life, titled "Amar Singh Chamkila," was released on Netflix, introducing a new generation to his enduring legacy.
Chamkila's personal life was marked by tragedy, but also by love and family. He had a son, Jaiman Chamkila, with Amarjot, and raised daughters Amandeep and Kamaldeep with his first wife, Gurmail.
Chamkila's impact on the music industry extended far beyond his untimely death. British DJ Panjabi MC, known for his hit song "Mundian To Bach Ke," cited Chamkila as a major influence. His fusion of traditional Punjabi music with modern beats continues to inspire artists around the world.
Though he may no longer be with us, Amar Singh Chamkila's music lives on, a testament to his enduring talent and legacy in the world of Punjabi music.
