Altemio Sanchez, also known as the Bike Path Rapist, was born on January 19, 1958 in Puerto Rico. He spent his childhood in Buffalo, New York, where he would later carry out his crimes. Sanchez had a relatively normal upbringing, but he would later become one of the most notorious serial killers in American history.
Sanchez briefly attended Buffalo State College, where he was enrolled in an industrial arts program. It was during this time that he met Kathleen Whiteley, whom he would later marry. Despite dropping out of college, Sanchez went on to have two sons with Whiteley.
Sanchez's descent into a life of crime began at a young age. He allegedly committed his first rape in 1975 at the age of 17. This was just the beginning of a string of violent crimes that would terrorize the community for decades.
Sanchez's preferred method of attack was to target women who were walking or jogging alone. He would then overpower them, rape them, and often strangle them to death. These crimes earned him the nickname of the Bike Path Rapist, as many of his victims were found near popular bike paths in upstate New York.
Despite years of eluding law enforcement, Sanchez was finally apprehended in 2007. He was linked to DNA found at several crime scenes, and was ultimately convicted of multiple murders and rapes. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Altemio Sanchez will forever be remembered as one of the most brutal serial killers in American history. His crimes shocked the nation and left a lasting impact on the community where he carried out his atrocities. The Bike Path Rapist's reign of terror may be over, but the scars he left behind will never fully heal.
