Alaqua Cox was born on February 14, 1997, in Wisconsin, and grew up on the Menominee Indian Reservation. She is of Menominee and Mohican descent and is one of three children born to Bill Cox and Elena Heath.
Attending the Wisconsin School for the Deaf, Cox was involved in sports from a young age. Despite being born deaf, she never let her disability hold her back. In fact, she became an inspiration to many as she embraced her uniqueness and faced challenges head-on.
