Alana Jane Nichols was born on March 21, 1983, in New Mexico. She grew up in a supportive and active family with her parents, Susan and David Nichols, and her three siblings, David James, Julianne, and Jovan. Alana's adventurous spirit was evident from a young age, always seeking new challenges and pushing herself to excel in everything she pursued.
After graduating from the University of Arizona in 2006 with a degree in education, Alana decided to further her studies and obtained a master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Alabama two years later. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for adaptive sports after suffering a spinal cord injury at the age of 17 while attempting a backflip on her snowboard. She made her Paralympic debut in 2008 at the Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, where she showcased her exceptional skills as a wheelchair basketball player.
